For those of you that know me, you might call me a gadget freak.
For those of you that don’t know me, the people that do know me might call me a gadget freak.
One of those things is cell phones.
In the last two years, I’ve changed my cell phone three times. Not a lot compared to some people, but a lot compared to others.
It should be no surprise to some that I just upgraded to the Sprint 6800 “Mogul” phone.

Before this phone, I picked up the Sprint Blackberry 8703e, and was pretty happy with it. But it did have a few nagging issues:
- Multimedia was lacking. Couldn’t play video or MP3’s, which I do every now and then.
- No camera
- Web browser wasn’t the greatest.
- Lack of games/free applications. (This doesn’t sound that major, but when the wife wants to borrow your phone to play a game while waiting for the movie to start, it’s a big issue.)
- Due to the security policy of my work, which is forced to the Blackberry, I wasn’t able to install some programs I wanted to. (This really isn’t a negative against the Blackberry itself, just an issue with my work.)
All in all, I was pretty happy with the Blackberry, but felt it was time to move on.
That’s when Sprint released the 6800.
I actually had the 6700, the earlier version of this phone, for one week before I purchased the Blackberry, but wasn’t happy with it. Battery life & size were the main issues then.
The 6800 is much smaller than previous Windows Pocket PC phones:

Here it is with the keyboard slid out. One nice thing about this model is that it runs Windows Mobile 6, and is better with one handed operations, especially with the scroll-wheel on the side, like the Blackberry:
And here it is, compared to the Blackberry 8703e:
As you can see, not too much bigger.
The 6800 also includes EVDO Rev A, which is will be enabled later this year, making it even faster for data than the Blackberry 8703e is. Also built in is wi-fi, so that’s nice while you’re at Starbucks or at home.
All in all, I’ve been pretty happy with it for the day I’ve been using it. I do have to admit I miss having it sync easily with my work email, but since we’re a Blackberry shop, and currently do not support the Microsoft “Push” technology, I’ll just have to do without it.
